Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing, maintaining, and extending simulation infrastructure code for proprietary biological modeling software platform
  • Assist scientific programmers, data scientists, and mathematical modelers in designing and implementing software solutions for scientific computation problems
  • Working with scientific user-base and architects to solicit new features and improve users’ workflow
  • Analyzing algorithm performance and optimizing code for computational efficiency
  • Responsible for all aspects of software process: design, prototyping, debugging, testing, etc.
  • Helping end-users troubleshoot problems
  • Contributing to documentation
  • Periodically assisting with small-scale system administration / IT tasks

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of BS in Computer Science.
  • Strong background in algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles is essential.
  • Commitment to writing elegant, reliable, robust software is essential.
  • Proficient programming skills in at least one of the following: Python or C++. Proficiency in Java is desirable but not required.
  • Solid object-oriented design skills, testing and debugging skills are required.
  • Strong background and interest in mathematics is desirable.
  • Eagerness to work in a team-oriented, small company environment

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop expert reviews of varying subject matter (50%)
    • Develop an understanding of cellular and molecular biology, immunology, physiology, and clinical trial-related concepts relevant to a wide range of Immunetrics’ projects through detailed scientific literature searches. This research will vary in scope from fine molecular and experimental details to general concepts in healthy and disease-state physiology.
    • Provide biological expertise that represents the foundation for the development of Immunetrics’ mathematical models in the form of influence diagrams, written reports, and specification sheets.
  • Clinical data analysis (25%)
    • Organize and analyze clinical trial data and databases from published and proprietary sources.
    • Critically collect, analyze, and interpret published data into a context which can be understood and utilized by Immunetrics’ team of mathematical modelers.
    • Maintain documentation of literature supporting model design decisions.
  • Project management (10%)
    • Work with the QSP Platform Manager to provide leadership for assigned projects, including statements of work, time estimates, and project progress tracking.
    • Closely work with mathematical modelers on the development, documentation, and maintenance of new and existing quantitative models of various disease states.
    • Organize and prepare background information, data, and results for internal and external communications and presentations.
  • Science communication (10%)
    • Communicate scientific information and model design rational to colleagues and clients who have expertise in a variety of disciplines.
    • Prepare marketing material for external communication and business development activities.
  • Other (5%)
    • Participate in a variety of internal and external projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should have a PhD in a biology-related field with a strong background in molecular/cellular biology.
  • Demonstrated skills in scientific writing and communication.
  • The ability to explain biological concepts to non-biologists.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate great attention to detail while maintaining a clear vision of overall project goals to ensure project success. 
  • The candidate must be capable of working effectively both independently and in a team setting.
  • The candidate must be able to be effective when working on multiple concurrent projects, which requires the ability to prioritize and thoroughly plan workflow processes.

Preference Given for:

  • A background in immunology or immuno-oncology are strongly preferred.
  • An understanding of human physiology is preferred.
  • Clinical research experience is a plus.
  • Pittsburgh, PA area candidates are strongly preferred.

Job Description:

  • Function as part of a team to design and develop mechanistic computational models of complex biological systems.
  • Work with both internal and client biologists to utilize research literature to understand biological pathways and physiological processes.
  • Develop, test, and utilize new models using Immunetrics’ proprietary modeling platforms. Responsibilities span entire modeling life cycle: analysis, design, implementation, parameter estimation, model training, debugging, verification, validation, analysis, documentation, and maintenance.
  • Perform parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis for models using empirical data.
  • Analyze model results and determine a course of action to resolve performance issues and model discrepancies.
  • Analyze systems of complex interactions, evaluate the data available to constrain system behavior, and then determine the appropriate level of detail or abstraction needed to best represent the system.
  • Communicate research and findings to technical and non-technical audiences inside and outside the company.

Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related field.
  • Strong background in computation, especially differential equations and parameter estimation.
  • Ability to understand complex systems and represent those systems mathematically. A strong understanding of reaction kinetics is essential.
  • Prior mechanistic modeling experience or background is required.
  • A functional knowledge of statistics is necessary.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively with others as a member of a multidisciplinary team is required.

Preference Given for:

  • Experience with the development of mathematical models of biological systems.
  • The ability to understand systems at a high level and make abstractions to represent the function of subsystems.
  • Prior modeling experience or background in one or more of the following domains: inflammation, immunology, cell signaling, oncology, or physiology.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver concrete project tasks on schedule.
  • Prior experience estimating effort required for individual project tasks.
